The University of Malawi Chancellor”s College where I will be teaching is in the city of Zomba, a city in southern Malawi with a population of about 90,325 people. It is the fourth largest city in Malawi following Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu. The Zomba Plateau is unique. A great slab of a mountain rising to 6000ft (1800m), it has vast tracts of cedar, pine and cypress but elsewhere the vegetation is wild and mixed. The plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and there are tumbling waterfalls and still lakes.
The college has an average of 5000 students in a variety of undergraduate programs, and students are drawn from all over the country, as well as from beyond Malawi’s borders. “Chanco” comprises five faculties: The Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social Science, and the Faculty of Education. Taken together, these faculties house a total of 25 academic departments.
